OUTSIDE THE LINES
DONNA BOLAM
Donna Bolam’s practice as a mixed media and abstract expressionist began in 2015. Abstraction proved to be a more accurate and meaningful portal for unleashing into her paintings a visceral and emotional response to what she had been unable to communicate for thirty-five years in her practice as a representational artist.
Through out those years, Bolam drew her inspirations from the palette of life and her experiences as a wife and mother, an intensive and palliative care nurse, and an outdoor enthusiast.
Donna employs a layering process of intuitive promptings and revealings that become visual translations that Bolam encrypts into her paintings as a wordless and textural sounding board of mark-making, colour and shapes.
Viewers have described Donna’s paintings as exuberant, engaging, and provocative storytellings of mystery and intrigue.

My last painting, and every painting preceding it, has always been my inspiration for starting a painting. I love painting. Like any new relationship, once the conversation between my painting and I begins, I never quite know how it will start and what direction it will take us. Despite the uncertainty of these beginnings, I always have a knowing that in the end, the painting will always have something to say or teach me about painting, life or myself.

THERESA MORRIS
Theresa Morris is an abstract painter based in the Lakefield area. The mediums chosen for the distinctive works in the Outside the Lines exhibit are both oil/cold wax and acrylic.
An experienced painter, Theresa Morris has studied art and painting at the Haliburton School of Art and Design and with many individual artists and artist groups over time. In spring 2022, Morris painted in rugged Burren, Ireland.
It is in recent years that Morris has become so drawn to the challenge and joy of abstract painting.
Abstract painting is an exploration of the formal qualities of painting - colour and shape in particular-used to create a visual experience drawing upon imagination and intuition. As a result, these paintings give the viewer the freedom to explore the artwork and see just where it takes them.

MARILYN SIMPSON
Marilyn Simpson, a member of the group Outside the Lines, paints mainly from life but with various degrees of interpretation. Her goal is to create an aesthetically pleasing painting rather than one that depicts exactly what she sees. In a landscape trees can be moved, in a portrait colours can be altered and in still life, objects can be portrayed according to what the painting needs.
In this depiction of a loon, the plumage is missing many of its spots and the base has picked up a couple of red splotches as a result of a fall onto a wet palette. She believes that some paintings say what you want them to say before you consider them to be finished. The advice then is to leave them alone. |

MARGARET TOUGH
For Margaret Tough, painting directly from life is a strong commitment. The human face is her greatest pleasure to paint. In this time of pandemic when models are scarce, she turns to fruits and flowers and other objects of beauty and utility in our daily lives.
Painting from life has also brought her to ‘plein air’ projects, working outdoors to depict scenes in our community. Whether working in soft pastels or in oils she strives to share her impressions of beauty and light and mood. |
RANDY WOODS
Peterborough artist Randy Woods paints in oils, in a realistic style with glimpses of impressionism. Light, colour and natural beauty are driving forces in his paintings. He paints so that viewers can share in the moment he has captured. His attraction to the works of the "old masters" surfaces in his paintings of people, landscapes and flowers.
Randy has participated in successful group shows in Peterborough and Art Around the Park, Wellesley, Ontario. |
