The Highlands en Plein Air Group Exhibition
hosted by
JOHN CHRISTIE

In this exhibition, five experienced artists from APFTA's Plein Air group will be displaying their completed paintings of the Highlands. It will be a wonderful exhibition! Kathy Haycock’s work has a very strong Group of Seven influence.  Keith Thirgood works with strong shapes and colour.  Jane Hall’s paintings are cheerful and full of movement.  Manuela Schmidlechner is an abstract painter new to plein air. John Christie paints more realistically.

Plein Air painters love the challenge of painting outside and the energy it brings to their artwork. Visit the show and see how many of the painting locations you can recognize and how different artists interpret the same scene.

Manuela Schmidlechner

I am a visual artist that paints on small and large canvas in oil and acrylic.
In this group exhibition I have a collection of 4 plein air paintings inspired by the magnificant local landscape around Bancroft and Haliburton Highlands East. The local scenery in each piece is empahsized by colour & organic shapes which invoke the viewer to awaken their emotions, curiosity and imagination.

"Eagles Nest " painted on location looking at the Eagles Nest rockface. In this piece I emphasized the beautiful. powerful,  sculptured shapes of the rocks that flow effortlessly from one form to another.  "Mother Nature" is the world's perfect sculpture.

"Forest Trail Road"  painted on location on Forest Trail Road. In this piece the emphasis is on the beautiful autumn colours and reflections on the water as well as the powerful stumps that come into focus in the fall.

John Christie

I am passionate about both the outdoors and my art.  I prefer to paint “en plein air” and I strive to capture a sense of the emotional impact that a scene has on me.  I am sure that you will respond the same way to the images that I have painted.

"Behind Station 6" was painted just behind Highlands East Volunteer Fire Station 6 on 28 hwy south of Bancroft.  It was a beautiful fall day and I was painting with Manuela.

Kathy Haycock

I’m a dedicated plein air painter.  I follow my heart painting onsite in Eastern Ontario’s Algonquin wilderness, across Canada’s northland from Greenland to Alaska and in the American Southwest. My major influences are my father, Arctic artist Maurice Haycock, and his long time painting partner A.Y. Jackson. Paintings and stories of their sketching trips filled my world as I was growing up.

"Crooked Falls" is painted at the Crooked Slide Park near Combermere. Most of the water bypasses the Log Slide and races down this picturesque cascade.

Oil on Panel, 12x6, $290.00 by Kathy Haycock

"Crooked Slide Park" is on Rockingham Creek near Combermere where I painted one day with John Christie. John was painting on the bridge when I painted this view.

Jane Hall

I work primarily with an assortment of brushes and pallet knives to apply thick, lush oil paints to a black canvas, resulting in paintings with rich textures and brilliant colours that bring her vision of the natural world to life.

I invite you to enter my paintings, to smell the trees and hear the water moving, to feel the wind brushing against their face, to return to moments of beauty and tranquility, and helping you reconnect with nature.
