Steven L. Brown is the woodturner behind Steenburg Lake Bowls, crafting one-of-a-kind pieces from locally sourced, wind fallen or hazardous trees in the Gilmour area.
Entirely self-taught, Steven began turning wood after retiring at Steenburg Lake and has spent the past 12 years refining his craft. What started as a hobby has become a disciplined practice rooted in patience, skill, and respect for natural materials. Each piece begins not on the lathe, but in the landscape. A tree falls, is harvested, then rough-turned and carefully dried for six months before being shaped and finished. From start to finish, the process spans roughly seven months per bowl, ensuring both form and integrity are preserved.
Steven’s work is known for its rich grain patterns, satin smooth finish, and the intentional imperfections that highlight each tree’s unique history. His bowls are both functional and sculptural - meant to be used, displayed, and appreciated as lasting, sustainable design.
Steven’s pieces have been featured in shops and artisan shows throughout Hastings and Peterborough, and are created for those who value handmade work with a story.
