A journey towards spiritual awakening has defined Henry Melissa Gordon’s work as an artist over the last decade. Underlying this work is a deep and lifelong interest in energy movement and in the life-force that permeates all things. It is the idea that all of life is interconnected that drives her creative practice.

These recent paintings explore the spirits of the animals. Many of the subjects are not actively ‘doing’, but just ‘being’. The images are simple and engaging as the animal observer watches the human observer. In that space of two spirits meeting as equals, the possibility exists for the acknowledgement of vast differences and profound similarities. Each creature bears their distinct species characteristics, but also their mysterious individual spirit.

Before shifting focus to painting, Henry spent many years making ceremonial objects for people who practice within shamanic traditions. She has undertaken numerous commissioned works for people across Canada, the US, Australia, the UK and Italy.
